Best looking: A tie between the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and the Irish Setter. The Afghan hound is beautiful, but way too stupid to consider. Ugliest: what’s that little nervous dog with the bulging eyes and chronic asthma? That’s the worst. Funniest: I don’t know the name of the breed. I see them on the televised Kensington Dog Show — they look like little mops.
The kind that doesn’t make any noise. Funniest looking breed of dog?

I like most dog breeds, as long as the dog is nice. I have a black lab/Rotweiler mix, and she is beautiful. Lots of people stop me and tell me how pretty she is. I was always partial to pugs and English bulldogs. Funniest looking dog : My son’s dog, hands down. It’s a cross between a dalmation and something or another. He’s black. He’s very fat, like a sausage, and he has a pointy face, and his eyes bulge out. Now, I love animals, and he is a nice doggie, but he is one very ugly and funny looking dog. He was so hard to train when he was a puppy, they named him "Monster", LOL. He is a sweetheart, but looking at him is not an easy thing to do.
so I panic. so what? So if I am getting poisoned so what? this is what people want. you were warned. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – wait a second, is this an anxiety panic group. I am one of the few people who seems to really panic. If you ask me panicking because of a bridge is not worthy of being on here day or night or giving advice when your not even telling anyone why your anxious. Thats just my opinion and thats 99 percent of what is wrong in world. We just don’t deal with reality. We are mean spirited and we are negative and our society is poisoning some so top percent get huge profits. and we do things to control the damage to control the outcome for individuals advantage. What people don’t know is what our news is about. not comparing with reality. Our news makes us think what is important not the facts of the world or REALITY. If you don’t like the fact that alternative energy stocks should keep going up or more shows about global warming or reality of diseases then do what a good percent have done and thats put me on ignore. Ignores it. I ultimately am also affected but I can describe how and why and see how govt allows polluters free will to poison our area of the country. As soon as pollution levels increase , like clockwork my breathing is hard. You try to accept that where you live .
Have u thought about moving out of the country? Just a thought. whythe country? there is lots good here, just can’t get there. sure we are a violent country. sure we ignore the obvious. Sure our own govt poisons us ( and I am serious) and sure I wish things were very different.

But I still have free speech. I was born here and see some great things , having been in other countries to compare I surely would never want what I saw some other companies had Still it saddens me we have become more of Me generation , we are very polarized, mistrusting, with few good role models anymore. If I could just find the good people in the good areas, and lastly Ihope our country can reverse the situation that I feel has happened. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Like I don’t know the answer? Our own government is poisoning people in Philly. Starting yesterday higher temperature, means my clean air machine starts to crackle more. Anyone got a air cleaner attached to your heater? It starts to crackle when dirt hits the machine. Unfortunately it gets louder as the particulates gets more numberous. Unfortunately thats when my asthma drugs are needed and even then I am taken back by the clockwork how the body bodies everywhere are affected and nothing is done. My guess that evidence points to your body cant cleanse out that damage. You are being poisoned and not enough people cares. Your brother, sister husband , wife and friend in this area is now being poisoned almost fifty percent of the time. in my area and a PBS special warning we will have the worst air in the world in the not too distance future. and no one says more? This is what growing up in US means? Gun violence every day here too , is there a connection GW? You murderer had a couple of illnesses in respiratory system that has made me keenly aware of pollution and sensitivity to it, and I am telling those that live in these areas your being poisoned. Your going to suffer way more then people who don’t have to absorb this amount of pollution from cars and coal plants. Try to be objective and get beyond the fact that our own government might be subjecting you to this slow poison by ask for objective data by comparing demographic and health of people from other non polluted citits and towns and our own polluted one . If you did, ( I certainly don’t need it cause I know) you would see a distinct differnce in people who are suffering and dying and having cancers and asthma more ( Pa. number 2 in nation) then many places on earth. Its more then shameful that govt is doing this but equally absurb that people who get up everyday and try to do the best things for their fmaily and get a good education can ignore the implications that they choose to live in F rated air and F rated environment for Cancers. Its shameful , because when I ask more and more people even out on the street, by suggesting the air stinks today, they nod their head in approval, yet they can’t take it one more step and do more by pressuring their leaders to do something now? Do they need to have their local news whores tell them when to act like puppets. ?Sometime news people , like people in govt have agendas ( advertising , protecting rich and not wanting people to move from their viewing and voting areas) and people should not have to wait for tv models to tell them what is importance. I categorically state we are being poisoned. I have no agenda politically except I do realize that we have allot of problems in US , even if 1/20th of the people in US are being poisoned daily and no one cares to do anything about it. I am sure this includes some areas of California also. All this leads me to try to see how things are connected Oh by the way thanks Arlen for doing nothing about pollution in your state. Its now 13 percent of public lives in poverty and of course you hear it on your paid whores they call the free news ? No Hmmmm wonder why? And you think its not possible we are not being poisoned by pollution. Where most of the commercials on tv ,are for cars ,asthma meds, allergy meds or cancer and heart clinics.in some cities and not others? You think its far fetched to think life is basically conspiracies? Where its ok to poison their own population? To produce jobs? especially for oil or rich? It is and will be and we are basically sheep to think otherwise. So its anything goes because chances are no matter what happens. the rich will gain in the end and they WILL KILLL EVERYONE of you without a care in the world so they can maintain yachts and play golf all day. . The thing is more and more people understand this and are starting to treat each other with disrespect. I was on ebay and all of sudden people are deceiving others like never before. People don’t care about others because they have too many things to worry about. They even have commercials that show how insensitive we are becoming to one another. big companies rip you off with phone cards that don;t work and bills and there often are no phone numbers to complain to., and I was in Best Buy and customers are screaming about being ripped, ..and when you do get an operator on phone, and they happen to answer, and you happen to make sense, they just put you on hold. Where good credit ratings means you will lose your credit if Sprint says you bought something you didnt and you can’t complain about it? Big companies will turn your gas off if you can’t afford to pay 120 dollars a month for gas when you don’t even use any except to cook food? everyone is paranoid and fecious for good reason or deceptive. . Wonderful role models we have and just a wonderful country , we got going on all fronts….. But the worse part that goes all beyond this and our state govt voting themselves raises whenever they want, is when govt actually crosses the lines and poisons you . ww.ericblumrich.com/thanks.html want role models? Our athletes not being role models? Who are our role models/ Tv actors? News and weather people who lie and deceive you? Its amazing our weather people say beautiful day while asthma meds in number two prescribed medication in the area nnd we had warning levels of pollution when I can’t even move around without wheezing and taking meds all day. Yet they worry about a fire in an abandoned home? Wonderful , Just wonderful .. and so you know how Nazi Germany happened. So all this poisoning has compelled to show other things that are connected. and why this is happening Millionaires are basically the only people being elected to Senate and now Congress Without voter reform we become a nation of rich elected with the only people able to get elected are the people rich enough to be able to afford to advertise. So eventually people being poisoned doesn’t have to seem so crazy after all or make sense when everything else is added up. Bush who gutted rules for polluters and energy companies while kids ( maybe not you) have to bring nebulizers to school., millions including me having hard time breathing, Our pollution levels for toxicidity has increased at least four fold and not a thing is said. Asthma has jumped from 5 to 10 percent to 16 percent of youth You see Bush as a role model,? when he makes rules that make it impossible to sue some businesses or polluters or the Saudis but more possible to sue consumers? Where Sierra club said Bush has unraveled 20 years of environment changes. Where kids have more mercury in their brains. Where many people don’t have any good days of air for months? Where in some cities the biggest outlays of advertising for tv is asthma, and presrcription drugs to treat allergies, cancers and heart disease.? Where cancers association and American Lung association rates the area in which you live as F? That doesn’t make any sane person wonder why nothing is done 0r said and we sit and watch tv passively believeing the hype from models on tv purporting to give the news? Great and beautiful out certainly can’t include polluted and warnings to not go out even if they are legitimate if tv expects continued billion dollars from advetisining from energy and drug companies. Where there are more people then ever getting damage from sun and skin cancers? Where people think its hot and humidity that causes asthma, or their deficincy in some kind of immune response , but not the the particulates and ozone that has jumped in my F Rated city or their city and I should be patriotic and accept my poisoning and having to pay for it so Bush could screw whoever he wants. Bush G O T O H E LL USA go to fking helll. You have no right to fking kill or poson me or our people. not to mention watch as practically every conceivable correlation gets worse. So the top one percent can get record profits again. Our govt could have , or should have spent the same amount of money on lost Americans lives in Iraq with alternative energy plans and our environment. If you assume oil companies gettting record profits and paying for Bushs election is connected then you know why we were not prepared with alternatives. Millions of people

Millions of people foresaw the rise of oil when Bush was in office but voted for him anyway. .Finally the matter of what drives business can be influenced by govt obviously thus oil and defense business soaring. What mandates better business when our kids are being poisoned though? One year we support terrorists the next we fight them. Could it be all because of jobs? After all if we are really concerned with violence from terrorism but not violence in our streets which outpaces terrorism then obviously no one really cares about potential violence in reality at all or fears unless more people can get paid in higher places to madate more funding. You might not know it but hundreds of thousands are dying from respiratory diseases thru no fault of their own. You hear that? Thru no fault of their own. out our country and some studies point that out. if you do a search on the net. We have mercury poisoning and asthma at record rates.
Like I don’t know the answer? All this leads me to try to see how things are connected Oh by the way thanks Arlen for doing nothing about pollution in your – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – state.

Question:

I can’t imagine not treating your cat with meds at this point. His condition is obviously *not* stable as is evidenced by the increased murmur and increased thickening not to mention the fact that you brought him in in the first place because he was obviously feeling bad. Having had a cat with a heart condition myself, I can’t imagine, considering the above, that a vet would recommend not treating. Please get a second opinion, preferably from a cardiologist. Medication can help to stabilize a patient. What does this vet want to do? Wait until more damage is done? Also, the crackling sound that often goes with feline asthma is also common with heart condtions and is a sign of edema. Your cat’s panting is more likely to mean that dema is happening and he needs treatment for the heart condition, not a wait and see approach. My cat Omar also presented with this as well. Assuming asthma without doing an xray to look for the obvious signs to me, and especially knowing there is a heart condition, is *extremely* worrisome, and *coughing* is the most common sign of asthma, not panting. I have a cat with asthma so I’ve BTDT too. Again, PLEASE get a second opinion! Just because a vet "seems" competent doesn’t make it so and the recommendation to not do meds is very alarming to me. http://www.newmanveterinary.com/felhcm.html Megan "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." -Edmund Burke Learn The TRUTH About Declawing http://www.stopdeclaw.com Zuzu’s Cats Photo Album: http://www.PictureTrail.com/zuzu22 "Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. The vet doing the Ultrasound and X-rays was very nice – she was also very direct, which I prefer. Apparently, Tigers heart murmer "HAS" increased from 3/6 to 4/6 (which is why the vet got upset last night) and there has been a slight thickening in the left ventrial wall compared to the utrasound readings 18 months ago, but nothing so significant that it merits medication at the moment as the whole thing seems relatively stabalised. Apparently, the literature suggests that for a stable HCM condition like Tiger has, rather than CHM, medication has not been shown to make a significant difference. The vet is competent, so I’ll follow her advice. Turns out that the panting is probably asthma!! Apparently after the ultrasound, they put him onto the equivalent of a kitty treadmill to see what he was like after exercise, and he started panting.
So glad to hear this, Helen! Answering late, because I had to go to the vet yesterday to take in Sabra, who had been having problems with his asthma over the weekend.
Prednisone tends to cause less side effects in cats than in humans, but it’s still often associated with fluid retention. If it were to be given for the asthma in a furred/furless person with heart failure, I don’t think there’s any question that a diuretic, probably furosemide (Lasix) should be given with it. Megan does raise some valid concerns. I simply am not familiar with the veterinary literature involved. In humans, there would be no question of starting medications early, probably a diuretic.

I’d think of CHF as congestive heart failure, and we usually spell out the different kinds of heart enlargement and cardiomyopathy. Are you referring to the valvular disease? Turns out that the panting is probably asthma!! Apparently after the ultrasound, they put him onto the equivalent of a kitty treadmill to see what he was like after exercise, and he started panting. Whilst this *is* indicative of heart problems, they listened to his chest and apparently he has "typical asthmatic sounds", whatever the hell they are. Needless to say, after the last 24 hours, I don’t really care!

I’m very glad they found that out, if medication becomes appropriate in the future. In human congestive heart failure, beta blockers (technically beta-adrenergic receptor antagonists) are a relatively new addition to the basic regimen of diuretics and often digitalis. Beta blockers, however, are contraindicated in asthma. It’s treatable, it’s dealable, and my little boy is actually OK. )) Thank you all for the purrs and prayers – you really have no idea the difference it made to me having the support.

Purrs again. If it helps any, while I don’t have heart valve problems, I did have heart enlargement from other conditions. With aggressive treatment, it’s completely reversed. Hopefully that might happen for Tiger. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Helen M

BTW, the one asthmatic cat that I knew was diagnosed during a summer about 20 years ago when the pollen count was HORRENDOUSLY high. I know that spring is on the way (and it can’t get here soon enough to suit me!), so maybe you can try and find out what the air quality is in your area. Maybe there’s pollen or mold or ??? in the air that’s triggering the asthma symptoms to crop up. Forewarned is forearmed.
Rose, Now that you share your personal experience. When my first son was born, I wanted to name him Arian (you know Persians were an Arian race), but my wife did not want to have anything to do with Arian race to her, it smacked of super race and Nazis. A few days ago, we were watching the wedding pictures of an old Indian colleague. There was swastika in one of the pictures. It turns out the Hindus have had it as a symbol for thousands of years. Essentially there are certain symbols that gets associated too much with a group and it has lost its original concept. rednecks are associated with southern racists. Just think of Kleenex and Xerox. — Quaecomque sunt vera —- "rose" <rosedawn_sc…@yahoo.com

Its spelled "hey". I wouldnt have a clue how I got MS. Nor do you, nor does anyone. The most we can have are deep suspisions. I wouldnt doubt I got it from one of the dozens of vaccinations Ive had. My shot record looks like a small book. Or maybe I got it from a goldfish I swallowed in college; who knows? Seriously, whats your honest best guess? Mine is immune-disfunction in conjuntion with exposure to mycoplasma fermentans incognitus, as it, and MS, are indistinguishable. Indistinguishable in those who are succeptable to it.
yo chuck, am i one of the ‘others who should know better?’ don’t want to be paranoid, but i haven’t seen anyone say that, so i wonder. what i said was that abdi has M.S. and posts mainly in the political threads, with an occasional M.S.-related post, and that there are other people reading the NG who follow a similar pattern, and THAT’s ok with me, even tho my posting style is the opposite — mostly M.S. related stuff, just the occasional visit to the political threads. so i might have missed some ‘abdi is ok by me’ statements. i never had a personal dislike for him, maybe partly because i’ve missed some of his posts — i reckon he’s got more ‘right’ to be here posting OT, than someone like ironman, who doesn’t have MS. himself, but always posts about M.S. — i won’t say ‘on topic,’ because it always comes back to that SINGLE topic with tom. i still don’t dislike him personally, because i dont’ knw him personally. some folks are good people IRL, but raving jerks online, no way to sort them out unless you know the people involved. i definitely disagree that this is a tragic attitude to have, if the ref was about me — if not, ignore me, i’m just being suspicious. while he still might be an ok person IRL, online he’s just looking like a deliberate flamer at this point, and there’s no reasoning with people who are insulting and racist because they WANT to be, rather than due to ignorance or sloppy use of language. working class rose

Actually for a while I tried not to use the term red neck. But something about it makes me go back. I realize some Germans were not NAZI, but tell that to German Jews. Essentially almost everyone turned on them and to them the whole nation was NAZI. I realize some red necks did not take pleasure in shock and awe but most did, its a mental attitude when you do not care about your fellow human beings, you buy all the dehumanization that you are spoon fed in State of Union. A guy like Rumsfeld comes and bamboozles you with words like "unknowable" and you think you are too stupid to comprehend.
big role. same here, jen. absolutely nothing auto-immune OR neuro-degenerative. my oldest sis was dx’d with rheumatoid arthritis, but she was over 50, and had not been dx’d when i got my M.S. diagnosis. something my gynecologist said to me not long ago — when my ma was pregnant, she took a substance called DES, an anti-miscarriage agent. the docs didn’t find out till years later that the babies born to women who took DES had lots of problems. then they figured it would all stop with those people — they originally thought it only affected female children too, thus the term ‘DES daughters.’ come to find out now that tam is of child-bearing age, it did NOT stop with the ‘DES Daughters’ — the ‘DES sons’ also had changes, and it continued with our kids — now they talk about ‘DES grand-daughters.’ anway, this stuff apparently does somethig that actually tweaks your DNA, which is why the problems continue thru the generations. the OB/GYN likened it to my being diagnosed with M.S. — nobody in the family ever had it, but once it shows up in the family, everyone else’s risk is increased. he said i had a very tiny chance of getting breast cancer — logically, it should not happen — but logically, i should not have gotten M.S. either. i have n oidea if the genetic changes caused by the DES played any part whatsoever in the M.S. thing, but i remember what the doc said — maybe nobody in your family, going back generations, has ever had problem X, Y, or Z, but the first time it shows up in anyone, bingo-bango, you’ve got genetic susceptibility right there. the folks in my family tend to get ‘lifestyle diseases’ — heart attacks and such mainly. i’ve never had the problems everyone else in my family has, instead i get something nobody else gets! my parents, grandparents, sisters, everyone hsa high BP, high cholesterol, all that, and i’ve got none of it. i don’t have a clue why — i haven’t lived a healthier lifestyle than the rest; i’ve had periods of heavy drinking, cigarette smoking, and poor diet, but my BP has been 110/70 for the last decade [it was lower than that prior], my total cholesterol is double-digit, my heart and lungs are fine — i’ve just got this damn disease that popped up out of nowhere! LOL, at least i’ve got a strong constitution, i guess — must have, or i’d have the stress/booze/fried food problems that the rest of the family has. for folks who do have relatives who also have M.S., I’m sure the connection looks much stronger. for those of us who are ‘the first in the family,’ it can be confusing. the longer i live with M.S., the more i lean toward the different sub-types/ different causes/different treatments hypothesis. no scientific knowledge, just thinking about how different the disease courses are and my own personal experience. rose

I wasn’t aware until just now that she’d actually concluded any of the several avenues of inquiry involved in this research. I’d like to see – now that she’s determined there *is* a genetic factor, what comes of the search for what genes (or combination of genes) are involved. I know a molecular biologist at UBC doing cancer research, and she’s been rather nice about decoding some of the genetics/cell-signaling language for me. With her help, I could probably make some sense of Dr. Sadovnick’s papers and their abstracts.
I’ve never had a cat that =wasn’t= crazy in one way or another. The present one, Mindy, chases her tail like a dog, except that she’s able to catch it. And then she beats up on it. Crazy cat. — Steve (Mindy’s daddy)

I’m so glad he’s home and doing reasonably okay. It can take some work to deal with asthmatic cats (I have two), but when it’s under control, they can do very well. Julie <—who’s going to join Ginger-lyn in the stop smoking campaign since I’m no longer allowed to smoke in the house. *banging head against wall* I blew it. *banging head against wall* I blew it. Sigh. Now to start all over again. . . .

I keep telling myself that this too shall pass and we’ll get through it and beyond before I know it. I think I have to get my mind past the sight of him on Saturday night, barely breathing and the knowledge that he could have so easily died. I’m still counting his breath and watching him closely. I took him to the vet for daycare today but tomorrow he’ll stay at home. He’s having fewer episode of coughing and is recovering from each one more quickly than the one before. I have to keep reminding myself its only been 3 days (seems like a month) and it will take time for him to heal. We start the steroid inhalants tomorrow evening. This should be interesting. He’s well enough now that he’s fighting me when I try to give him medication…I suppose this is a good sign. The information the vet gave me mentioned that he could never again go outside and I had to keep windows and doors closed all the time. But I keep thinking about Nikki who goes on walkies with Marina and spends the summer at the island. I’m hoping that once we get the infection cleared up and the steroids in his system that we can relax more and learn to live with his illness with a little more ease than I have right now. Its good to know there are people here that I can turn to for advice, however. Purrs for your poor headache (grin…it must hurt by now with all that banging). I understand completely. Julie

<some snipping The information the vet gave me mentioned that he could never again go outside and I had to keep windows and doors closed all the time.

I don’t understand that not going out thing. Is the vet afraid he might have allergic reactions to something or why is he supposed to stay inside? I mus admit, Nikki’s asthma is nothing close to what Sam has been experiencing. She just has these fits of coughing, but no real shortness of breath, and she recovers from the coughing fits quickly. She sometimes wheezes when she breathes, but it doesn’t seem to bother her at all. She gets the zoomies just like a kitten, and doesn’t seem to get short of breath even after ten laps around the house. I’ve read that there have been very good results with acupuncture for cats with asthma. The effect of one treatment may last up to six months. I’ve been thinking of it for Nikki, but she seems to be doing pretty well on just the Prednisone, so I’ll see about that if she gets worse. We will continue our purrs for Sam and hope the medication will make him feel better. Poor little guy, he’s had a tough life. What a lucky little cat to have such excellent slaves as you and Rusty now! — Marina, Frank and Nikki marina (dot) kurten (at) pp (dot) inet (dot) fi Pics at http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/frankiennikki/ and http://community.webshots.com/user/frankiennikki

I took left the house this morning around 6:30 am, stopped at a 24 hour pharmacy and picked up the Zithromax and Albuterol and at 7:30 I was signing Sam out of the hospital. We stopped by our regular vet who incidentally were waiting for us. They open at 8 am, I got there at 8:05 am, they had already received faxed copies of Sam’s medical report from the emergency clinic. I’m very impressed with the emergency clinic. My vet checked Sam over and gave me a lot of literature on feline asthma and a prescription for Flovent which is an inhaled steroid. She also had the feline mask I need to use with Sam.

Such good news!! Continued purrs for Sam to overcome all that ails him. Jill

Sam was being given Brethine which is Terbutaline. He will continue with this by oral dosage every 8 – 12 hours as needed for coughing and breathing troubles. As long as he’s taking the Brethine he can’t be given the Albuterol but then the Albuterol is only for emergency uses anyway and I’m hoping I won’t need to use it. We got home around 9:15. I mentioned that Sam had some trouble with constipation this weekend as well. He hadn’t had a bowel movement and they’ve been giving him Lactulose which I was given as well to give him until his stools softened. Well…seems he just didn’t like going in a strange box. The first thing he did was had a snack and 30 seconds later he had a very satisfying BM. Satisfying for him. Unfortunately he scratched the curtain that was hanging near the litterbox into the box with him and used it for toilet paper I believe. Oh well, another small sacrifice for my buddy. He wandered around for about an hour and then we all went to the bedroom for a nap. It is strangely hypnotic counting a cat’s breath. He woke me up with a coughing episode around noon and I thought we were going to have to head for the vet again, but he’s settled down and his breathing is about 27 breaths per minute. He’s very soundly sleeping and doesn’t appear to be in any distress. Its time for a Brethine tab and I think for my peace of mind I’m going to give it to him even though he doesn’t appear to need it. I’d hate for him to suddenly need oral medication that takes about 30 minutes to work. I think tomorrow I’m going to let him spend the day with the vet just to make sure we’re in the clear and after that, if she agrees, he can stay home.
Purrs for Sam to continue to feel better, and for you to be able to stop smoking. Sometimes I feel guilty because I won’t let anyone smoke inside the house. Then I think of the down sides of smoking and how it would make me want to start up again if I had to smell it all the time, and I don’t regret my decision a bit.
I have experienced acute attacks which have caused me to miss many important extended family events as well as religious events …and the problem is?

This looks like the beginning of a post that I might of started. I have certainly had this problem over the years. For the record I have chron’s disease. Just before the event I would develop severe pain, or the big "D", or just be too exhausted to attend the event. I have traveled 350 miles to a wedding and the next morning I could not get up to go to the actual ceremony. Later in the day I would be able to make it to the reception. Paul

Response:

I know this is a late post but the point is…. Definition of "extended family events" – a most painful event in which one must endure incessant ramblings of insipid individuals only related by marriage who you would not otherwise choose to associate with. Definition of Religious events – worse then "extended family events". Dont’ get me wrong, I’m not an atheist or anything. I just think religion is like golf. As the saying goes – golf is a great way to screw up a nice walk. And religion is a great way to screw up one’s spirituality. So face the facts. Your symptoms are psyco-somatic. I would give anything to come up with a good excuse to avoid those stupid family events. Unfortunately I can’t quite seem to get my UC to act up when I really need it. But you have succeeded where I have failed. I salute you! I recommend watching Annie Hall, there’s a good scene that exemplifies this very well, in case you don’t quite catch my drift. Anyway, once you face the fact that you really hate these events you will feel much better about yourself. regards, Jeff

I know just what you mean about events that are exciting just wear you out thinking about them/getting ready. Your whole body and nervous system are connected. My father had horrible bleeding ulcers and they would act up over happy or unhappy events. He was told all his life "it’s all in your mind". The poor dear. His life was not easy. Come to find out, it’s a parasite called H. Pylori that couses ulcers. A germ. A bug. I think ALOT of intestine problems will be discovered that it’s germs of some sort.

I am glad to know that I am not crazy, just a chronie. Paul

Response:

If there is nothing special coming up I seem to do not too badly but as special events approach, my body gives out on me. Am I going crazy or do others experience similar behaviours?

You’re not crazy, but you’ve fallen into a vicious circle: anxiety about an upcoming event triggers the symptom that you’re anxious about, which increases the anxiety…etc. You should talk this over with your doc and start some anti-anxiety meds. You may have to take them only temporarily, until you extinguish that vicious circle. A similar thing happened to me several years ago.
This is off topic but Cornel University also produced a PL/1 complier and run-time environment for volume student use in the 70’s. The IB compiler was not the fastest in the world I understand.

This happens quite a lot with me as well. Before I went out on disability, there were a few times when I would arrive at work so exhausted that I literally had to lie down in my office for an hour before gaining the strength to just go back home… The worst though were the times when the big "D" would hit while commuting! Not a barrel of laughs when you have an open fistula tract which allows everything to pass unabated…. ergh!!!! Anyway, the point of my response was not just to gross everyone out with ugly details but to let you know that this is QUITE NORMAL for some of us. What I do now is to let anyone know that my attendance / participation is always up for grabs. When I do have to meet someone else’s schedule exactly, I plan far in advance and at times, modify sleep and eating times in order to ensure that I will be able to get from point a to point b and complete whatever it is… For example, I take naps in order to attend evening functions and if I need to fly somewhere, I do NOT eat for eight hours prior to flying. Just find what works for you and try not to worry about the perceptions of others. Tricky to do in real life and real time with real people but I have found that when I involve others in explaining my constraints, they are quite understanding and try to make whatever adjustments might be necessary. Good luck to you!! ~Lisa S.
Paul, That’s great that you have a meaningful project to work on! I have to say though, with forty hour stretches why are you surprised that you hit an occasional energy wall? Your body, and possibly your mind are trying to tell you to slow down a bit. I tried to shovel the driveway the other day (did half of it), and then went grocery shopping. My husband told me it would be too much, he was right! I layed on the couch all evening while he took care of our 2 year old. Take care and take it easy, Nina

good article. how true. thanks, jeff

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Sunday Jan. 2, 2005 Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service A hidden disease By DAINA KLIMANIS While members of Jodi Eller’s junior high swim team did laps in the pool, Eller had to make frequent sprints to the bathroom. Her friends went out for fast food, but Eller was unable to stomach the grease. Some days, she could not eat at all. Her classmates were working their way towards graduation, but Eller came home early every day to sleep. It took about a year for Eller to be diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a disorder causing chronic and painful inflammation of the digestive tract. Crohn’s most severely affects young adults, who are most likely to be diagnosed with the disease, and for reasons researchers don’t fully understand, the incidence of the disease is rising. Now Eller is a senior at the University of Central Florida and one of an estimated 500,000 people in the U.S. living with Crohn’s. Though a recent survey indicated Crohn’s often limits participation in higher education, recent leaps in medicine have helped Eller lead a more active college life than ever. A HIDDEN DISEASE There are few concrete figures on the number of Crohn’s patients, but studies in numerous communities agree that more people are being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease than in recent decades. The disease’s cause remains unclear. It is most common in developed countries, and more common in urban than in rural areas. Researchers believe something in the environment sends the body’s immune system into overdrive, causing it to attack the gut itself, said Dr. Scott Plevy, co-director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Genetic predisposition is also thought to play a part in the disease. Plevy compared what happens to the intestines of people with Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, a closely related disorder, to scrapes a person might get on his knees after falling off a bicycle. "Entire regions of the intestinal tract can look like they’re scraped like that," Plevy said. "The only difference is in this setting, it doesn’t heal." Though the inflammation is invisible except to specialists, the symptoms are painfully obvious, as Eller discovered. Like most people with Crohn’s, she experienced stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea so severe, she had to stop racing with her school’s swim team and going out with friends. "I was afraid that this was going to be sort of how my life is going to be, that this was who I was evolving into," Eller said. "And I was just afraid of having that pain every day." Like many who have Crohn’s, Eller was at first diagnosed with another condition. Her doctor treated for hemorrhoids, but her symptoms only worsened, Eller said. Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis often go unrecognized among primary care physicians, Plevy said, because of a lack of awareness about the disease. To make diagnosis more difficult, their symptoms resemble that of irritable bowel syndrome, a prevalent and much less serious disorder. Almost a third of Crohn’s patients had to visit five or more doctors before they were diagnosed with Crohn’s, and nearly half first received a misdiagnosis, according to a survey released this summer by Manhattan Research. The survey was conducted on behalf of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America and the Digestive Disease National Coalition, and sponsored by Centocor, Inc. Not only is the internal disorder difficult to diagnose, but it has received relatively little public attention, Plevy said. Though Crohn’s is more prevalent than multiple sclerosis, another inflammatory disease, it is much less recognized. A HEAVY TOLL After Eller began receiving treatment for Crohn’s, things improved, she said. She had to eat bland foods, but at least she could eat. At one point she was taking about 17 pills a day, but her pain receded for periods. Even so, Eller never dated because her condition embarrassed her, she said. Good periods were followed by bouts of illness that put her in the hospital, and at one point, the inflammation wore a hole in her intestine wall. "You’ll feel good and active and you can start doing normal things, and then all of a sudden you’ll start doing (worse)," she said. The Manhattan Research survey found that not only did Crohn’s impact personal relationships, but one out of six young adults with Crohn’s said the disease limited their ability to enroll in higher education. Eller found that when her Crohn’s was flaring up, she was hardly able to plan for any kind of future. "When your body hurts, that’s not your goal, to plan what you’ll do in a month or a year," Eller said. "When you are sick, everything changes." The consequences of the disease can be severe, sometimes requiring surgery to remove portions of damaged intestine. Sixty-nine percent of Crohn’s patients have been hospitalized in the last five years, averaging more than a month in the hospital, Manhattan research found; more than half of Crohn’s patients ages 18 to 27 have required surgery in that time. NEW TREATMENTS Things have been changing for Crohn’s patients in the last few years as new treatments are giving them more options than ever. Plevy said that when infliximab, a newly developed drug sold under the brand name Remicade, came out six years ago, it was the first to ever target the underlying causes of inflammation. "If you look at even modern textbook over Crohn’s disease, (it says) our goal is to treat the symptoms," Plevy said. "With Remicade, that has really changed. For the first time in our history-and this is where it is very exciting for us-we are talking about an agent that we think can alter the natural course of this disease." Eller started taking Remicade a few years ago, and soon had more energy than she could ever remember having, she said. Her symptoms waned. Eller hasn’t missed much class in the last two years. In the spring, in addition to class, she was working at an internship at In the meantime, Eller deals with typical college stresses like exams, and plans a normal life for her future. No longer just living day-to-day, she said she hopes to someday get a doctorate so she can research and teach psychology. "At this point, I’m pretty optimistic," Eller said.
