I'm Off Prednisone!
Question:
i was just wondering if i could ask. after being so long of pred, was it the imuran that allowed you to get off. i have been 4 months on pred, started on 40mg went to 20mg back up to 40mg,started imuran (7 weeksago) and am now back down to 20mg and reducing thank g-d at 2.5mg per 10 days. i have heard that imuran does amazing things. is it what did it for you? sincerely leon
Actually, I have been on Imuran since last April or May. I started at 100 and worked my way up to 200 mg. My doc swears that it was the Imuran which allowed me to stay in remission and get off pred. It takes a while to kick in, but it is worth it. Jennifer Levine

Congratulations to anyone that gets off pred. I also am on imuran and am pred-free as of a month ago. Of course, it doesn’t exactly equate to pain-free(since I can now feel every bone in my body crying for attention), but it’s some sort of milestone, even if only temporary. I think my adrenals have become dustbunnies over the last 5 years on the steroid trail and it’ll be a while before things feel ‘ok’ again but I’ve got to agree that at times, the pred seemed worse than the flareup. At times I was nothing but grateful for the prednisone too. Hope you enjoy a long span of relatively decent times. Mick i was just wondering if i could ask. after being so long of pred, was it

Can you tell us what your prednisone tapering schedule was like?
Snip Imuran and 2 Immodium. Finally went off Pred 1-1/2 weeks ago. No

I am off prednisone (as of this week), too!! What a great feeling to not have to take that stuff anymore – my face and body are already beginning to come down. I had a hard time tapering. However, what seemed to work for me was dropping 2.5mg every two weeks. I went all the way down to 2.5 mg total, and then STOPPED!!! I will never take that stuff again. Jennifer Levine

Kathy: Congratulations. I can still remember how happy I was to get off of Prednisone a couple of years ago. I’ve been in remission on Imuran (50 mgs a day) for about a year and a half. Even after about three months of being totally off of Prednisone, I could still feel the effects of it. In many respects, I thought Prednisone was worse than the flareup.

Hi everyone, I’ve read these postings for several months now and have responded to a few. Was diagnosed with Crohns-Colitis in November 1995 and was put on Asacol and Prednisone. February 1996 went off the Pred and Crohns symptoms returned immediately. Went back on Pred (up to 60 mg.) and also started on Imuran. Started tapering the Pred in July 1996 (after many, many side affects). Am now on 12 Asacol tabs a a day, 200 mgs of Imuran and 2 Immodium. Finally went off Pred 1-1/2 weeks ago. No Crohns symptoms have returned. My face has started to lose some of the water retention, I have at least 30 lbs to lose, my hands and feet are still numb and painful with burning sensations – but, I feel better than I have for over a year. I’m going to start walking again for exercise and doing things in addition to my part-time job and staying in the house, close to a bathroom. It’s really great to have this newsgroup to read. I learned more about what was happening to me and why than any other literature and will continue to read it. Thanks to all. Kathy
