Response:

–     Now, I had been dry coughing all morning, and this heavy mucous production only came on after the Ventolin puffs. Was this in fact an asthma attack? Any other comments?

Get a referral to a pulminory specalist for a through evaluation.  It sounds like there may be some condition mimicing asthma or that you may have another condition that is being masked by the asthma.

Please see comments as the story follows: – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Mine is a fairly recent dx of asthma and I’m not quite sure yet what it’s supposed to feel like, so plse bear with me. I’d like to describe my last attack in order for more experiencend asthmatics to tell me if this was or wasn’t one, and whatever else they can comment on. The reason I ask is because I went to the ER of the Ottawa Civic Hospital and the doctor snidely said that my lungs sounded clear so it wasn’t asthma and in fact it wasn’t anything. I should say mine is more of a coughing type asthma, rarely have wheezing, and that I take Flovent and Ventolin. So here goes the description: –    very hot and muggy in Ottawa today; –    started coughing heavily and feeling it hard to breathe as soon as I left the air-conditioned bldg at work; –    took 2 puffs ventolin; which helped some; –    after about 5 minutes or so, started a heavy mucous thing where it seemed all at the same time to come up from my throat and down from my sinuses and eustachean tubes;

*** sounds like an allergic reaction where the large inflow of air-conditioned air impaired cilia and that lead to the hypersecretion of mucus. –    this mucous was white and foamy, and so thick that i was literally choking on it, and it was hard to cough it out;

***** You need to be checked for: 1. Intensive evaluation for heart failure and pulmonary edema 2. Evaluation for possible epilepsy (seizures). 3. Allergic form of bronchoectasis. –    By the time I got home (about 20 mins), I had filled up almost half a carboard coffee cup with it. It has the consistency of let’s say thick corn syrup, but when lifting strings of this stuff with a straw, the strings would not separate no matter what (like pizza cheese). –    this mucous production died down after about an hour and after, I my breathing felt clear; –     Now, I had been dry coughing all morning, and this heavy mucous production only came on after the Ventolin puffs.

*** Mucus production after ventolin is normal. Was this in fact an asthma attack? Any other comments?

*** May have been if that’s a cough-variant asthma. However, I strongly recommend to exclude the aforementioned problems.
