How old are we?
Question:
Hi, I’m Sheila, and I was diagnosed asthmatic when I was 9 years old, I am now 55 and despite many set-backs I am still in there, fighting. My nan also had asthma and she lived to be 78, so, theres something to aim for ! All the best, this seems to be a group of great people.
I keep seeing reports from doctors that asthmatics tend to outlive nonasthmatics, and be healthier in their old age. However I have yet to see any hard numbers on this. "The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has limits." Einstein

Which makes this a good year, since we’ll have had two blue moons in three months! :-)

I recall seeing a study that showed that Americans without a degree from a Med School lived to an average age of about 79 while those with degrees averaged 58. I would love to find the documentation on that again… Harold Spatz Independent Alpine Dealer I help people breathe easier, I help people make money by showing them how to do the same thing. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -I keep seeing reports from doctors that asthmatics tend to outlive nonasthmatics, and be healthier in their old age. I’m 37, diagnosed with adult onset/reoccurance cough variant asthma three years ago after contracting an influenza. It seems to run in my family. My father had same, lived to be 72…amazing..considering that his asthma was never treated. Paula – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I am 51 and there aren’t many asthmatics of my acquaintance. hi everyone. I am a 16 year old female and I have had asthma since I was a baby. I am on prednisone, flovent, serevent, singulair and albuterol via neb and inhaler. I am actually doing a lot better this year then I was last year; well at least I am able to go to school sometimes. I am in a bit of a flare up right now, that is how I found this newsgroup I was just searching. I hope I am doing this right, I guess I will find out, Nicole

35 years old, only asthmatic in immediate family. My three year old daughter was diagnosed with asthma when she was one. Interesting the pediatrician told me that having one parent with asthma gives a 50% chance the child will, and if both parents have asthma there is a 75% chance the child will. Juli

I’m 33..I’ve had hay fever since I was a child, but it evolved into asthma. Some years I get the hay fever symptoms (itchy nose and eyes, sneezing, dripping etc.) and some years I just get asthma every day. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 28. I am 51 and there aren’t many asthmatics of my acquaintance. But I sure don’t know any old ones. Is life expectancy connected to the disease or genetics?
Life expectancy is probably related to genetics (most). Asthma is probably also related to genetics. Whether or not the two are related, I don’t know. I have a friend who is in her mid-70’s who has had asthma forever — she has had some health complications related to the meds she has been on, and has had some asthma flare-ups, but she is still kicking. BTW, most of you probably know that people who are left-handed are disproportionately apt to be asthmatic. There are some other interesting correlations btwn left-handedness and other birth and health statistics. I hope this is at least part of the information you were requesting. -KD

Both. Having ANY chronic illness reduces your life expectancy. Having one that involves crisis episodes reduces it more. However, having good genes increases it [and bad ones decrease it]. On the whole, having NO control over my genes, OR the fact that I have several chronic illnesses, I approach it from the viewpoint of maximizing my environmental variables in the direction of both longevity AND quality of life. This means eating a well-balance diet high in grains and fruits/veggies and low in fat, getting plenty of water, getting sufficient rest, avoiding stress, taking my meds properly, getting exercise, avoiding triggers, avoiding acquiring infectious illnesses, and dancing naked in the street on the night of every blue moon.
