cough, short of breath when exercise, no wheezing!
Question:
Hello to all. I need some advice. For 3 years I’ve had the most annoying cough. It’s non-productive and it comes and goes w/out reason. I’ve had allergy tests that revealed that I’m allergic to about everything under the sun. However, allergy meds. don’t help. My pulmo. function tests were supranormal. The only time I’m short of breath is w/ exercise. Albuterol seems to help this. It does not help the cough, however. Nor do any other asthma, GERD, or whooping cough meds. What could be causing all this? BTW, I NEVER wheeze.
It could be ‘cough variant asthma’ which has no wheezing. Typically have cough attacks at night or triggered by exposure to allergens. Its important to avoid the allergens, you may have to do a little detective work. Maybe try the anticholinergic inhaler, Atrovent. Could also try cough medicine like dextromethorphan or guaifenesin. More info: You may have a post nasal drip caused by an upper respiratory problem, rhinitus or sinusitus. According to Chap 10 (Asthma & Related Illness) in ‘The Asthma Sourcebook’, "A watery discharge or drip is common with many irritations of the nose and sinuses. Because some of this discharge may be directed back toward the throat it is often termed ‘post nasal-drip.’" "mucus dripping into the throat & windpipe causing cough & irritation" The book also mentions that for rhinitus and sinusitus that intranasal corticosteroid sprays may be extremely helpful in reducing inflammation. Prescription nasal sprays beclomethasone, budesonide, fluticasone, flunisolide, and triamcinolone are available in the US. There is a web page on Allergic Rhinitis from National Jewish at http://www.njc.org/MFhtml/ALR_MF.html They also have a searchable date base on allergy & lung topics.
