Does anyone have any suggestions for a chronic cough? It seems to be worse at night. I am currently taking singulair, aerobid, atrovent, maxair flonase, doing the water pik nasal irrigation. I also have the bed elevated and sleep on 2 pillows. The coughing seems to really aggravate my asthma and has caused me to throw up or gag several times. I am allergic to just about everything and have dust mite covers, hepa filters and hardwood floors in the bedroom. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
It sounds like you have cough-variant asthma. Nocturnal asthma tends to indicate inadequately treated asthma. This may require increasing the inhaled steroid dose (Aerobid in your case), or switching to a stronger more effective inhaled steroid like Pulmicort; addition of a long-acting bronchodilator, either Serevent inhaler or TheoDur. Or both Pulmicort and Serevent. Ellis

Just a thought. have you been tested for reflux? I had h-pylori which caused me t develop asthma. Theo-dur can also cause reflux. I still sleep half sitting up from the habit I got when I had reflux.

Coughing at night was the biggest (and worst) symptom of my asthma. Once I was taking the correct drug it went away, though I have been struck to some degree with the habit of waking at night. I also coughed at day and dearly threw up once when driving. My work mates were fed up with the coughing, I was fed up and I imagine the neighbours were as well – I live in a terraced house. However it didn’t take anything like the number of drugs you are using to get things under control. I don’t have any allergies I’m aware of – the cats are no problem, I use a Dunlopillo (natural latex) mattress as it’s so good for my back and avoid cigarette smoke & artificial scents as in air fresheners. I presume your current doctor has nothing more to offer (hence your post) so I suggest you try a new doctor if at all possible. writes Does anyone have any suggestions for a chronic cough? I found that I had a sinus problem (congestion) which resulted in a cough. I was given Nasonex and the cough disappeared. Irrigation of the nasal passages did not relieve symptoms for me. niasha – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Does anyone have any suggestions for a chronic cough?

my son also throws up when he is having a bad coughing spell.when i told one doctor he said well are you giving him a surpressant for the cough?? i have been told by previous doctors not to use a surpressant because that just masks the symtoms.his response was well we tell you that to cover our butts but you can do it.is that crazy?? so i only use something when he has gone a few nights without sleeping and needs to get rest and i will only give him one dose of something at night that the doctor has prescribed for him. take care barb
