Asthma and low blood oxygen level

Question:

Thanks to "Surfer!" for telling me how to get Outlook Expess to get my name right!

It wasn’t me.  I was Jo An Firey as per the bit below: <quote click "tools", "accounts", "news", "properties" Jo An Firey * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free! </quote I don’t use Outlook Express so have no idea how to drive it! Surfer asked what medications and what strengths my wife has tried. Becloforte (250 microgram), Becatide (100 microgram), Singulair and Uniphyllin (200 microgram). She has had Attrovent (0.2 ml) with Pulmicort (0.5ml) in a nebuliser and, for a different period, Combivent in a nebuliser. Singulair, Uniphyllin and Combivent gave her nightmares and she felt unwell.

Not sure how long she tried the steroid inhalers.  When I started on them the doctor said they could take time to become effective, and the original dose was double my normal one for the first week. However to give the dose we not only need to know the amount of each puff, but how many puffs per day she was taking. At present she is on Serevent and Ventolin inhalers, and also taking a course of antibiotics (Vibramycin i.e. Doxycycline) in case a chest infection is the cause of coughing. Away for a week. Look forward to more responses when I get back!

Hope you enjoy yourself.  Written from sunny Scotland – can’t you see the haggis on the page and the tartan watermark? ;-) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Mike My wife has cough variant asthma. She has had various inhalers and a nebuliser, but with very little relief. Allergy tests have all proved negative. Whilst in hospital for a broncoscopy she was found to have a low blood oxygen level (18% low). Is this common amongst those with asthma? Can this itself trigger the coughing? How can you improve your blood oxygen levels? Any advice would be very welcome. Mike

The first thing is that you need to find out exactly what the problem is.  If your doctor is not aggressively trying to determine what the problem is and find a solution you need to find another doctor. It’s a terrible responsibility – but somebody has to be the Americans.

Has she had a chest X-ray? Any advice would be very welcome. Mike
