Question on Parasites

Question:

I have heard that 1 in every 4 people have undesirable and unhealthy parasites living off them, and creating a multitude of illnesses. How can these parasites be realiably detected and eliminated? Thanks<<<<      Ok — now that I have wasted a good ten minutes or so going through a number of useless posts making fun of this message, and/or making moronically oblique references to MLMs, I have some USEFUL information to offer to the person asking this question.      Wildman, I’m afraid that I don’t know about your statistics one way or another.  As a licensed health care professional (as well as someone who has also had the dubious benefit of suffering from chronic illness for over 13 years); I DO know, however, that intestinal parasites are indeed  FAR  MORE  of an occult problem than most conventional health care providers realize (or care to admit!).        If you would like to be tested for intestinal parasites, do NOT even bother with the standard "Stool Specimen for O & P" tests that are done in most laboratories.  Instead, there is a state-of-the-art test for intestinal parasites and enteric pathogens that uses specimens taken from the rectal mucosa, and uses special dyes for detecting any microorganisms.     This test is done through The Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory, 18-A Regent Park Boulevard, Asheville, NC  28806, Tel.:  (704) 253-0621.  Your physician will have to call this laboratory, and request their kit for a "Comprehensive Parasitology X 2 (Swab) Test".  When the kit is received by the physician, then you will need to go into the office for the doctor to perform the first part of the test, and to give you the remainder of the kit in order for you to be able to complete the rest of the test at home.      This test is Medicare approved, as is this laboratory (Medicare more or less being the "gold standard" as to whether or not something is acceptable conventional medicine, and not just a "quack" regimen).  I don’t know exactly what the test costs today, but it was somewhere around $90 about 6-7 years ago.      This test might not pick up a chronic case of Giardia lamblia, as that can often invade the jejunum and small intestine, which is much higher up in the gastrointestinal tract than what this test targets.  If there is a possibility that you might be suffering from chronic giardiasis, this lab has another test that targets that.  If you have problems with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, colitis, Crohn’s Disease, and/or many gastrointestinal complaints; then it would by all means be to your benefit to have this testing done (especially BEFORE they decide to do any cutting on you, and try to — probably unnecessarily — remove your colon).      If you have any of these tests done, and the results come back showing the presence of any intestinal parasites; the treatment for such is relatively inexpensive (such as a three day course of Vermox, repeated again six months later), or a course of metronidazole (generic Flagyl).  Personally, I have not found the so-called "natural" remedies (such as black walnut shells, pumpkin seeds, grapefruit seed extract, etc.) to be all that terribly helpful in ERADICATING intestinal parasites.  They may, however, be helpful in keeping intestinal parasites from recurring, though.      If you do test positive for any intestinal parasites, you should probably also have any family pets (cats or dogs) taken to the vet, and given a course of a broad-spectrum anti-parasitical.  Ask your vet to just treat the pet, and to not waste your money doing any questionably useful stool tests on the pet. Cats and dogs are NOTORIOUS carriers of various different parasites.      Also begin using scrupulously good handwashing technique (using hot water, liquid hand soap, and only paper towels) — FREQUENTLY.  Do not eat any raw fruits or vegetables that are  not peeled UNLESS they have first been washed carefully, and then soaked either in a solution of 1 cup of Clorox to 1 gallon of water, or sprayed heavily with hydrogen peroxide; and then rinsed thoroughly.      For any of you relentless cynics out there, I have absolutely NOTHING to gain from offering this advice/information (certainly nothing monetary, at any rate).  I found this regimen to put MY arthritis into extended remission (I wouldn’t presume to use the word "cure"), as well as to have helped other friends with various chronic health complaints.        I would love nothing more than to see some of the big corporate conglomerate drug manufacturers put out of business when they can no longer make enormous mega-bucks from the obscene prices charged for the various medications now commonly used to treat arthritis.  I would also like to see ruthless surgeons quit doing unnecessary colon removals on people, leaving them dependent upon the use of a colostomy bag for the rest of their lives.      So please — spare me from any sarcastic comments that you may be feeling inclined to make — chances are, I may very well already have heard them all anyway.

     BL — why, thank you very much for the kind comment — SO refreshing to see!!   :-)      To answer your question; no, I didn’t have much in the way of gastrointestinal symptoms to any really significant degree.  I came across this theory through a somewhat roundabout means of personal research — and then decided that the logic was sound enough, and the treatment was reasonably innocuous enough, to at least give it a try.      Unfortunately, I didn’t learn about the Great Smokies Lab, and the testing that they do for intestinal parasites, until AFTER  I had tried the Vermox/metronidazole therapy, though   I did have a couple of friends, however, whose testing through that lab turned up some real stunners — such as Entameba histolytica  that hadn’t been picked up through the conventional (read: useless) "Stool Specimen for O & P" tests for that sort of thing.         Don’t you find it awfully interesting that one of the "big guns" treatment for arthritis is Plaquenil — an anti-MALARIAL drug?  And isn’t it interesting that minocycline (an antibiotic in the tetracycline class) is being found to be QUITE helpful in treating some cases of arthritis??      I would truly be thrilled if I ever see the day when it is revealed that most cases of arthritis are indeed caused by some sort of definitively treatable microorganism — much like the way that most gastric ulcers have been found to actually be caused by the microorganism, Helicobacter pylori.      Anyway, thank you again for the nice response!   Anne  ^  ^  {__}

Me too.  Actually there is a doctor at Vanderbilt that has identified a particular microorganism in every case of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue that he sees– something like Chlamydiapnemonae Not sure if that is spelled correctly.  I’m not sure how he diagnoses and treats it though.  Does anyone know?  Some doctors use microscopy (live cell) to find parasites.  Parasites are really hard to find, apparently, even GSDL has trouble with this sometimes.     Anyway, thank you again for the nice response!

Well, I’ve been flamed many times and I’m interested in parasites. Plus I’m a nice person of course.   And Dr. Harris definitely "writes" before he thinks! Steve, I knew that was some sort of weird libertarian joke, but it was in very poor taste!!  Of course, I will defend your right to post such stuff, but it certainly wouldn’t be funny to someone from Oklahoma City.  (and I have strong libertarian tendencies).  BL

Yes, I think most MLM products are over-priced. There are some good products I must say, but they can usually be found in retail stores for much less.

I wouldn’t wish the parasites I’ve had on anyone–even a flamer!  I have had them many years, apparently, judging by their sizes and types.  I have identified tape worms, round worms, and flukes in quanity that I expelled over a six month period.  I’m afraid they are a very real and serious problem for many people.  They also worsen a person’s general health.  In my case, the disease of chronic hepatitis C  wasn’t about to improve before I won a few battles with the parasites.  The expensive laboratory tests I had  never did show ova, but I’ve heard that it is a common occurence.  I have used a couple of different  herbs (mostly black walnut extract) with consultation with an herbalist, an acupuncturist, and my internist.  I have nothing to sell.  I believe though that the marketing plans out there for various anti-parasite preparations could benefit many unsuspecting people along with those doing the selling.  I haven’t tried any of them, however.  DLou

Marleen, your references don’t address the question. The question is:  do 1 out of 4 people have undesirable and unhealthy parasites living off them?  The fact that parasitic diseases exist, or that AIDS patients get parasitic diseases is indisputable. However, whether 25% of the population is being dragged down this way is a different matter entirely.  Frankly, I doubt it.  And at least some of these "parasite" postings are come-ons from the Scientologists, IIRC.      These are my opinions only, but they’re almost always correct.      "After all, this is still the land of opportunity.  If you know       where to look."  – Jack Douglas

Prof. Paul Prociv Contributors: Assoc. Prof. Paul Prociv; Mr. R. Those species which are especially important, because of the numbers of people infected, or the severity of disease produced, will be considered in more detail. At the completion of the subject, students will know about: the structure of  the important parasites; and how they are related to each other; where they  occur and how they are transmitted between people and, in many cases, other  animals; how they move within the human body and interact with tissues to  cause disease; how these infections are diagnosed; how they may be treated,  controlled and prevented. Yes, I think most MLM products are over-priced. There are some good products I must say, but they can usually be found in retail stores for much less.

 I would truly be thrilled if I ever see the day when it is revealed that most cases of arthritis are indeed caused by some sort of definitively treatable microorganism — much like the way that most gastric ulcers have been found to actually be caused by the microorganism, Helicobacter pylori.

BL

Or here is another place to check on parasites in humans: PA306: PARASITES OF MEDICAL IMPORTANCE 10 credit points; 2nd semester; 2 lectures and one (3-hour) practical  class/week; compulsory prerequisites, PA200 or ZL222 or ZL224 Subject Coordinator: Assoc. Prof. Paul Prociv Contributors: Assoc. Prof. Paul Prociv; Mr. R. Luke (State Health Laboratory) Goal: To familiarise students with the broad range of parasites that infect humans, and the diseases they cause. DLou
