I really like this. First of all, I would like you to understand that I have no problem with you wanting to host your own bulletin boards. It’s just fine with me. I think it is a great idea. But I wonder why you didn’t simply put a pointer up on your bulletin board that directs people to all of the usenet newsgroups that you posted your message to. After all, it is fairly likely that anyone reading these usenet newsgroups already knows what they are and how they can be useful. And it is not clear to me how much different your bulletin board is from these forums. But yet you come to the church, you tell all the parishioners how useful a church can be, and then you invite them all over to your church. And you say that you do this *only* because you know how useful a church can be to a parishioner. No other motives?? Then why not just direct people here to these usenet newsgroups?? Personally, I like to go where people are self-reflective and self-aware. It makes it easier on my weary sense of having to watch out for people who are *only* watching out for my best interests….. Hi Stewart No, I am not the church man you think. I don’t even want to be a saint I will tell why I started this. I am a 34 years old male from Holland. I was working in Amsterdam harbour untill august ‘94. Then the doctor diagnost me with Ulcerative Colitis . 5 weeks later they brought me as a terminal patient to the hospital. Another 5 weeks later I had an ostomy surgery , during that surgery the medics made a litle mistake and I am in a wheelchair now. I was used to work over 72 hr a week. But I can’t work anymore so I feel bored here in my bedroom behind my computer. That’s why I toke (in december 95) this internet connection ! And I started looking for info on ostomies, colitis,crohn’s and IBD. But there wasn’t any streamlined info , so that’s why I started the 1st Dutch Ostomy Site. Then I started a contact site , I thought like you and I didn’t expect any respons but what the … I was bored so why not. Now there are hundreds of people on those site looking for pen pals. Why ? there are news groups ! I think we all want our own cafe. That’s why there are so many in Amsterdam And you don’t have to be a saint to start a cafe. It’s just because I like the contact with other people. I never ever can start my real cafe even though I have my diploma’s. But I don’t want to sit here in my wheel chair and do nothing. So I hope people like you will give me the chance to have my own virtual cafe. I hope you don’t mind ? Hello, When my now 11yr old daughter 1st was Dx with Crohn’s disease 2 yrs ago I was not online & it was difficult to find others that understood. When I came online in April ‘97 one of the 1st things I did was look for info & connections with other parents who had a child with CD. I’m now not even sure how I got there, but the 1st place I found was the nooduitgang site. Here was a list of people I could write to who had CD themselves & even some whose child had it! I wrote to a number of people on this list & had replies from some of them. One in particular mom, who has a daughter the same age as mine & has Crohn’s disease like mine, wrote to me & from this she & I (& occasionally our daughters) stay in contact by email, share our successes & woes, & we even fortunately had the chance to meet this summer! I cannot say enough about the support this "penpal" has given me regarding my daughters chronic disease…it is certainly not as easy to find in the "real world" as childhood CD is not your everyday topic of conversation.
