phentermine vs. ionamin?

Question:

Hi Judy,         Iomanin is a time released version of phentermine. Some Drs. believe that because of the time release effect, the Ionamin is the better choice. In other words a little goes a long way. One big problem is the price. When I switched from the Ionamin to the phen, the price difference was enormous. About 1/5 the cost.         In the long run, I’ve also discovered the effect of the phen lasted at least as long as the ionamin. Due to several majour surgeries due to chron’s disease, my bowel is shorter than most and the time release effect is wasted on me anyway.         My Dr. feels that whatever the patent prefers is ok. Both meds are basically the same, and are taken for similar reasons. Several people I know switched to the phen from the ionamin and are doing just great. Plus they’re saving lots of money.         Take care and good luck with this marvelous adventure in self improvement.         Michael

Anyone out there researched this?  If so, your feedback would be appreciated. Judy 50 down — 15 to go!!!

My understanding is that phentermine is HCL-based and Ionamin is    resin-based, and that 37.5 mg of phentermine is equalivalent to 30 mg    Ionamin?   It would be more accurate to say that both 37.5 mg of phentermine HCl and "Ionamin 30mg" contain 30mg of phentermine base.  Ionamin contains phentermine base bound to an ion-exchange resin, which is claimed to be released slowly throughout the day.  Most forms of phentermine HCl are immediate-release, though I know that some (Eon) have formulations with "tiny-time-pills".  Phentermine has a long half-life however it’s administered, so that the differences between the formulations may not be too important as far as duration of effect is concerned.  An immediate-release formulation might have more stimulant side effects shortly taking it, but that’s just a guess. I have read one study which compared Ionamin with phentermine HCl, and there was no significant difference in blood levels after a few days, once you adjust for the amount of phentermine base in each. 30mg of phentermine HCl, another common dosage form, contains 24mg of phentermine base.    My physician, who specializes is bariatrics, told me that he will    prescribe phentermine if "money is an issue", as Ionamin is definitely    more expensive, but prefers to prescribe Ionamin — he states that the    dosing and timing is somewhat different between the two, and that the    Ionamin is more effective. A doctor will definitely develop a set of clinical impressions after prescribing a drug for a while, but they don’t come down from the mountain on stone tablets.  Still, you should take his comments as coming from someone fairly experienced with prescribing both forms of the drug, and thus not to be dismissed lightly.  You’d really need a double-blind study of both forms to prove or disprove this impression, and I don’t think one has been done. — Steve Dyer
