Methotrexate causing my psoriasis?

Question:

I am on 15 mg/week of MTX, that is usually what people take for psoriasis too, isn’t it?

Hi Ann, It depends on the person. I read your other post and now realize you know about MTX, but you still need to see a doctor for directions on dosage if you are going to use it for your psoriasis. I’m glad you have the appointment. Hopefully, you will be able to continue with the MTX and get both problems under control. A topical might be prescribed in conjunction with your immunesuppresant, but don’t self medicate without a doctor’s supervision! Good Luck! Ava

Response:

I started mtx for psoriasis about three months ago.  I am improved but not as drastically as I would hope.  Funny, the one place that is completely cleared is my scalp and I had it very bad there. I agree with AVA you need to see a derm about this as soon as pozssible before it gets real rampant.  Your family is proof that this is inherited. Loretta Eisenberg

If anyone has had an experience like this, or knows what is going on, please let me know.

Hi Ann, It sounds like you are genetically predisposed to have psoriasis and yes, Methotrexate is often used quite effectively to help the symptoms of psoriasis. However, dosage may vary greatly from person to person and for illness to illness. You need to see a good dermatologist about your skin and also to speak to whoever is treating the Chron’s disease.   There is a lot of information in this news group that should be helpful, so keep reading and posting. Just be sure you talk to a medical professional as well because as you probably know Methotrexate is a very powerful drug and must be used cautiously and with supervision by a doctor who knows all about MTX and its side effects.   To answer your original question as to whether MTX causes psoriasis, no it doesn’t. However, it can stop working to keep the cells from rapidly growing. You may have been keeping the symptoms at bay without knowing it and have now become immune to the current dosage.  Everyone seems to respond differently, so please see your doctor asap and welcome to our support group! Hi Ava, I don’t have a dermatologist yet, but growing up seeing people with psoriasis, I am pretty sure that is what it is.  I am on 15 mg/week of MTX, that is usually what people take for psoriasis too, isn’t it? Thanks for replying. *HUGS* Ann

Hi Everyone, I am new to here.  I have just developed psoriasis after being on Methotrexate for about four months for severe Crohn’s disease.  I have never had it before, but I know what it is, because my Mother, Aunt, Uncle and Sister all have it.  I take my Methotrexate on Mondays, and I notice that the psoriasis, which is limited to the back of my scalp for now, although it does seem to be expanding, goes into overdrive. Has anyone else had a problem like this?  I know that Methotrexate is often used as a treatment for psoriasis, so I am confused why I have just developed it so suddenly since I have been on it.  Does this mean that the Methotrexate isn’t suppressing my immune system as it should be?  I know that it hasn’t been helping my Crohn’s much, but I am trying to be patient. If anyone has had an experience like this, or knows what is going on, please let me know. *HUGS* Ann
