Pednisone & Calcium
Question:
Prednisone over long periods of time can lead to bone loss. My son has had a burst every month for the last 20 months. He has also been dairy free for about one year. We give him a daily calcium pill with vitamin D. Calcium can’t be absorbed by the body without vitamin D. This will help with the damaging effects of steroids, but can’t be gauranteed to prevent all bone loss. Hope this helps. Feel free to E-Mail me anytime. I have 3 boys with asthma & run a suppport group here in Chicago, Il. Maureen

Our five year old son with chronic asthma also has serious allergic reaction to all dairy products. He is regularly on becotide and pednisone (called prednisolone in Australia). Have just been clued in on the effect this has on calcium intake. We are obviously concerned about it. Any advice on how to manage this?
Our son, now 9-1/2, has never been able to take any dairy products. When he was younger, he drank a soy formula (Nursoy) that contained adequate calcium and other nutrients. Now that he’s older, we give him a *lactose-free* calcium supplement and vitamin supplement daily, and feed him canned salmon and sardines. I say lactose-free because, unless it says so, there’s a high likelihood that the supplements were buffered in lactose and may cause problems for the milk allergic (I know, it’s not the protein, but it still can cause problems and it just isn’t worth the risk). The least expensive supplement is calcium carbonate, but it can be constipating, so make sure he gets lots of fluids and fiber. This allergy thing really stinks, doesn’t it!
