Just diagnosed with Crohns
Question:
The CDAI is a scoring system they use in clinical research. here is a link to an online version http://www.ibdguy.com/cdai.shtml If you do drink milk, drink only the ultra pasturized. Just on the chance that your CD is triggered by MAP. No point in taking a chance of reinfection. I like milk too… it is the only thing worth putting on corn flakes. Mike – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Mike, Thanks for all the info !!! One question that I have is what is the CDAI, and how do I find out what mine is ? Is that something I work with my doctor on ? I’ve been reading the CCFA site and some others, and will look at the IBD site you mentioned. Thankfully there’s a lot of places to get some info, even if it is relatively the same from site to site. My doctor had raised my prescription of Asacol from 800mg/3xday to 1200mg/3xday and I think its finally working….I havent had any cramping or abdominal pain in several days, now just waiting for runs to stop. I think this might also have to do with me ot having milk in some time, which is a real bummer as I love my milk. When I heal from my surgery, I’ll try it one more time just to be sure. Thanks again for the info, i really appreciate it ! Gary Howdy… Hope you are having fun with the pain killers… Smoking is very bad for CD. Smokers have a higher CDAI (Crohn’s Disease Activity Index) score on average than non smokers and tend to develope fistulas more often. You need to quit if possible. (I say this as I light another… do as I say not as I do
) For the dietary, it will be pretty much the same as UC. Stay away from grease, high fiber, milk, etc. (unless you can eat these with no problem… then go for it!) Now that you have a "firm" Diagnosis spend a little time getting to know this disease. A good place to start is http://ibd.patientcommunity.com You should also look at the research being done on mycobacterium avium ss. paratuberculosis(MAP). This is a bacteria that causes a Crohn’s like disease in animals. Current thinking is that MAP also causes Crohn’s in a large number of people. I am currently on an antibiotic treatment called RMAT that has made a world of difference for me. I went from a CDAI score of 460 to a score of 97 in the span of a couple of months. (150 or less is clinical remission.. 600 = surgery) Please visit www.shafran.net/crohn and www.crohns.org to learn more about it. Be sure to check out the "In The News" page and to sign up for the "Crohn’s Disease Research, Inc" newsletter at www.shafran.net/CDRI If you have any questions about RMAT or MAP please feel free to email me or better still post them on the newsgroup. Mike Please note: I am Dr. Shafran’s patient as well as his webmaster. Hi I was originally diagnosed with UC, which in itself has been quite difficult. This past thursday I went in for a complete GI series exam and found out on friday that I have Crohns. On top of all that, I had a periarectal abcess which was extremely painful and the doctor said probably related to the Crohns, which had to be removed Friday. Nothing like getting operated on at 11:30pm on a friday….not my way of spending a weekend !! So, now I’m taking plenty of painkillers, an antibiotic and my asacol. I think I take more drugs now than my grandmother !!!!! Anyway, can someone please tell me what Crohns is about ? I know it involves the small intestines, but from a dietary perspective, is there anything I need to watch out for ? Also, while I know smoking is bad ( i really do !), how does that affect Chrohns ?
