Chrohns disease or Ulcerative Colitis

Question:

Hey all, I am on another ng as well as this one.  Having just been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, I happened upon a coincidence?  I asked in the other news group how many suffered from Panic Attacks…seems to be around 30 percent of them.  I would be interested in whether anyone in here has IBD! Robin

Response:

Hi Robin, I may be way off line here, but it seems that several months ago there was a thread that contained a bunch of QandA’s about IBS or irritable bowel syndrome.  Is this the same thing?   If so, I believe there were many sufferers of both IBS and GAD/PA, the IBS being stress induced I think.  If I am way off, please someone jump in and correct me as this is more of a faint memory and you know how that can be :) little bear – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hey all, I am on another ng as well as this one.  Having just been diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, I happened upon a coincidence?  I asked in the other news group how many suffered from Panic Attacks…seems to be around 30 percent of them.  I would be interested in whether anyone in here has IBD! Little bear, Inflammatory Bowel disease has little in common with Irritible Bowel. Except for symptoms…*hehe*  that is what they told me I had for the last 4 years…in abscence of any testing I might add.  As soon as they hear you have panic disorder..they are always quick to put whatever is wrong with you down to stress.  IBS is aggravated by stress and so is IBD.  The difference being that IBS does not cause weight loss and other symptoms…ie…arthritic joints..eyes disorders ect.  The ER dr told me that IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion.  In other words they should have never told me that is what I had without running tests for Inflammatory Bowel Disease or Cancer.  I stand five foot five and am down to 98lbs so they are finally getting serious.  *sigh*  I had a colonoscopy done today which revealed ulcers and inflammation of the small intestine.  This is a real disease! Not one caused by stress.  Although from what I read you can have concurrent IBS and IBD.  I still remember the first time my gut acted up. I was living in England and had to go to bed for three weeks because my stomach hurt so bad I thought I would die.  I went to the Dr twice and they told me colic.  Colic?!!!!  After three weeks it subsided , but within a week I had my first panic attack.  Didn’t know what they were…but I have always felt there was a connection.  I’ve told the dr’s that repeatedly over the years…they said it was just a coincidence.  I hope to post more information here as I gather it.  I do however think there is a distinct connection. Hi Robin, Information I have states that there is a high incidence of PD and IBS coexisting. Good luck, Meryl

First of all, I know somebody’s going to get confused about this: IBD – inflammatory bowel disease – is not the same as IBS – irritable bowel syndrome. The former is serious and potentially life-threatening, and a lot of times later on in the course of the disease, people require surgery; the latter is just a pain in the…oh, never mind. Anyway…I don’t have IBD, but a dear friend has UC. He doesn’t have PD, just a family history of "the ol’ bipolar." When he takes prednisone (not all the time, just periodically when he has flare-ups) he gets really anxious and moody…so that’s a complication for people who already have anxiety or mood disorders. Some people with IBD who *don’t* have PD develop agoraphobia from fear of having attacks of diarrhea and not being able to get to a bathroom! Incidentally, I have trouble believing that IBS is caused by "just stress" although it is definitely *exacerbated* by stress. I don’t have IBS, but I’ve gone through periods when I couldn’t keep down food at all. -elizabeth

I think IBD isn’t necessarily comorbid with PD but its precursor IBS (irritable bowel syndrome, colon spasms) is. Some researches and doctors believe IBS is often actually a part of PD. It’s preferable (but not always possible of course) to treat IBS before it gets worse and will develop into IBD. Philip

Ahum…..I’m afraid I confused them. I heard that IBD was the result of untreated IBS. Obviously that was misinformation which I passed on here. Nothing so dangerous as *a little knowledge*. Sorry about that. Philip – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Me…I have IBD and IBS.  I have more problems with anklosing spondylitis and my eyes when I have flare-ups.  I am supposed to take sulfasalazine, but it hurts my gut.  Right now, I’m doing ok.  No sulfasaline, no steroids (only for my allergies).  Anyway, yes I have PD and IBD and IBS.  I like to say I have a touch of *IBD* because I rarely lose weight. I just have the chronic anemia, diarrhea, stomach aches, and so forth.   Mel

Robin, I was run thru all those tests for colon diseases (mainly Chrohns) as well as cancer due to anemia and weight loss last year. Had the dreaded colonoscopy and swallowed a camera to check the top part. They found diverticulitis which is supposed to be ok unless it gets infected and turns into "losis" (I think I got that right, if not it’s the other way).  Panic hits me straight in the stomach. Others get headaches, trembles, etc. when confronted w/stress…nope, it’s a guaranteed trip to the BR for me. Happens alot in stores for some reason.  It can be some little issue on the phone or something of a major nature, doesn’t matter…there goes the stomach every time. So, in my case, yes, panic and the bowels work together. Heck, even if it’s good news, the same thing happens. I just can’t get too excited about ANYTHING!! Good or bad.  Take care, Miriam
