children with ibs
Question:
Hi, I have had IBS for as long as I can remember and it took doctors 20 years to finally find something instead of the same crap "it’s all in my head and I,m fine" well, my parents didn’t believe there was anything wrong with me either until I got a diagnosis. Since then they have been very supportive and helpful. All I can basicaly say is that just be ther for your daughter, empathize the best you can. Help her out to help herself. Supppport her and be there for her. It seams you are doing a great job and so is she!!! Keep up what you are doing for one. Keep getting informed and try new alternatives as mentionned in previous news messages.

I am a grown adult who was a child with IBS. I have had since I can remember. Beware that it can result in Osteopenia (bone demineralization) and even Osteoporosis if left unchecked for the childhood years.
Response:
I hadn’t heard about that effect yet, thanks! I will certainly have it checked periodically.

Painful it is indeed, but not as painful as it is for her! She has been through the battery of tests, from Endoscopy to C-scans, and the barium series, etc…. They ruled out Crohns and the other main diseases first. She has been on several different medications, none of which work very well. She definitely knows that it’s a lifelong deal, and as she’s getting older she seems to be more aware of her diet, and doesn’t give ME such a hard time anymore about watching what she eats! She checks labels now for the fiber content, etc. Stress does seem to be a MAJOR factor with IBS. It is with my daughter anyway. It got really severe a couple of years ago when my former marriage was falling apart. So, I just keep her happy and healthy and relaxed as possible and she seems to do much better. She loves sports, especially basketball, and of course with all the jumping and running with most sports, it upsets the acid in her stomach so she also takes Axid AR or pepcid…what ever seems to be working at the time. The citrucel definitely causes a lot of gas! She passes it forever! She still feels comfortable taking it though. Her doctorhas her on an high fiber diet which has really seemed to help alot. Thanks for the concern and the advise! Jodi

I have searched and read so many stories of adults with IBS. I have yet to find one concerning children with this disorder. I am a mother of a child with IBS. My thirteen year old child has had the symptoms since shortly after birth, and was finally diagnosed a couple of years ago. I can’t tell you how hard it is to watch my child agonize in pain and not be able to do ANYTHING to help for sometimes weeks at a time. I am teaching her to do as much as she can do to alleviate the symptoms through diet, and Citrucel. She has been on so many different medications, and none of them worked. She gets so frustrated with herself and her body sometimes and I don’t know how to help her other than hold her and pray that it lets up soon. Through diet the "bouts" seem to be farther apart, but the day to day symptoms are always there of course. Not to mention the "citrucel" daily…. I guess I’m searching for other IBS patients views, and what is the best way that I can support my daughter, other than what I’m already doing.

Hi there I am also a mother and would like to say how painful it must be to watch your child go through this. I think you are doing everthing you can to help her. she will have to understand that IBS is life long and she will have to watch herself probably for a very long time. You did not mentioned any meds? or calcium supp.? reduced stress? all these can help with the symtoms. BTW have you ruled out other stuff like chrohns and colitis with test? I think you are doing a super job with you daughter. One thing I have learned with the many many years of suffering the more I keep fighting it the less I win. What I mean is that when the symptoms come on I take a warm bath relax as much as possible and wait it out without freaking out the less stress the easier the episode will be. Take care, Chantal P.S. Citrucel can cause gas maybe try oat bread fortified with fiber and its much better tasting than citrucel. APUCOP wrote in message <19990129230018.28278.00001…@ng10.aol.com
