Wheezing cat
Question:
I’ve got an 8-year old female who has recently started to make a sound sort of like she’s wheezing once or twice a day. These "attacks" generally persist for several minutes before she calms down, and during that time she holds her head out straight but lowered almost like she wants to vomit but is suppressing it. She also shakes a little. She’s short-haired and combed/brushed regularly so I don’t think this is due to hairballs, especially since attempts with hairball medication like Laxatone and Petromalt have done little if any good. Since she doesn’t actually throw up I have no way to check for hair in it, though, so I certainly wouldn’t discount that entirely, but if it is the culprit there is little more I can do for her.
If she also seems to be having trouble breathing I’d take her to the vet right away. By trouble breathing I mean short, shallow breaths. My cat started wheezing one morning 2 weeks ago with shortness of breath later that evening. We went to the vets where they discovered fluid in his lungs caused by Hypertropic Cardiomiopathy (enlarged heart). This in a cat the was "normal" the day before. I’d give the vet a call if he looks like she’s having trouble breathing.
Response:
Maggie had this problem as well the vet prescribed Cefa drops /or/ pills. It’s probably an upper respituary infection and could be fatal in felines!!! Don’t let it go on to long take her to the vet soon!

Sounds a lot like my cat and she has bronchial asthma. An x-ray of the lungs is necessary to verify. Prednislone is used (very inexpensive) and we give her 1/4 of the smallest pill that they sell and only every other day. Recently she had another x-ray and he lungs looke better than when she was first diagnosed. Shes’s 16 now. Boyd Stere

She’s in excellent health otherwise and doesn’t have any history of diseases or food allergies. One other thing: massaging her throat gently seems to help it a bit, though it doesn’t stop the problem entirely it has some sort of soothing effect. I’ve got an appointment for her with the vet in a few weeks but she seems so miserable that anything I can do to help her sooner is worthwhile. Many thanks for any assistance you can give with this. — Michael Love; Programmer, Network Guru, and general Genius of All Sorts "Against stupidity, the very gods themselves contend in vain." – Schiller

Very often when a cat wheezes like this, it has a hair in the throat that didn’t go down properly. Massaging the throat (as you mention) is good. Gently patting her rib cage first on one side, then the other may also help get her past the wheezing. When she calms down, you can take a small dab of Vaseline petroleum jelly (the common drugstore kind) and spread it on each of her front paws so she will have to lick it off rather than shaking it off. That will help the errant hair wend its way to the stomach. She’s in excellent health otherwise and doesn’t have any history of diseases or food allergies. Yes, well, she does need help. It would seem to be very worthwhile to move her vet appointment up to next week. 8^) — Alan At what point does one suspend belief?
