Poll: Adult onset Asthma-What cause?

Question:

If you have Adult onset Asthma, What do YOU think was the cause?

Something I was exposed to working outdoors in hot, humid weather sawing and clearing away trees and brush after the hurricane hit Raleigh a couple of years ago. The power was off so there were no air conditioned breaks indoors for a number of days. I started coughing and haven’t stopped since. Before that the only time my "whooping" cough occurred was near the end of hour-long water aerobics classes. Joan Joan

I’ve always had allergies, but for as long as I could remember it was usually nasal symptoms like runny and itchy nose.  About 5 years ago I turned up with asthma.  It seems to be progressing too. I don’t remember this but my Mom told me I had bronchial asthma as a really young child.  I do remember being in the hospital at 4years of age with pneumonia.  I have allergies to some foods, and to some grasses, trees, and molds.  I’m on immunotherapy drops twice a day. My (unscientific) opinion is undiagnosed childhood asthma is a likely cause for a large number of the cases.  Another possibility would be that people with the genetic predisposition for atopic disease simply ‘roll the dice’ every year.

Living conditions. I had asthma when I was a child until about 14 or 15.  Later in my teens I was asthma free.  When I was 29 or 30 it came back with a vengence and hasn’t let up yet.  The only thing I can come up with is where (what part) of the country you live, and what grows (or doesn’t) around you. — Cyber (My return addres is fake.  If you want to reply to me, please do so at: You know what to remove… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – If you have Adult onset Asthma, What do YOU think was the cause?

I apparently have had allergies for a while – mostly to dogs, and I work with dogs in my profession.  I have been a perpetual "sniffer" and "throat clearer" and cougher for a long time, and when I experienced a huge amount of stress over the past several months, I was hit with my first attacks.   I can now feel triggered by car exhaust/pollution, cigarette smoke, molds from foods (especially fruits and vegies), and occasionally by the dogs I work with (I am a trainer).  As for the hot and cold debate – I have always preferred cold-cold-cold drinks, and even crave them.  But things like ice cream can trigger a bit of SOB and coughing, as well as milk and frozen yogurt… but I love them so I am not ready to give them up. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. -Joopie

When I was a kid, I coughed a lot, was allergic to dusts, changes in air temperature and suffered from broncitus<sp Now I am 36, cough a lot, am allergic to dusts, & changes in air temp, and have been diagnosed as asthmatic for the last 3-4 years! I don’t think I have changed much ( other than getting older!) but the medical diagnosis has changed totally!!! — denis my yahoo.com address is a spam trap! my real email address is myname*AT*Charlie*Hotel*Foxtrot*DOT*softnet*DOT*co*DOT*uk (remember the phonetic alphabet !) 8
