Atrovent

Question:

I am asthmatic and have been so for 4 years. Are there any known side effects of severe trembling with Atrovent as the hospital consultant recently prescribed it and I simply cannot take it due to these effects. He tells me that these side effects do not happen with this drug, in spite of the fact that my own GP has seen this happen. I would be grateful for any information that could be supplied on this. Thank you, BC.

Response:

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten the shakes from Atrovent, but I’m also not really impressed with its effectiveness. I recently quit taking it because it seemed to actually cause a mild bronchospasm whenever I administered it. Bob

Atrovent is prescribed for bronchitis and emphysema. Tremor is an unlikely side effect, see prescribing info below. However tremor is often associated with bronchodilators like Ventolin, Proventil, Maxair, terbutaline, bitolterol. Here’s a link to the Atrovent PI: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/ipratrop.htm ipratropium bromide Excerpt: "Indications and Usage: Atrovent (ipratropium bromide) Inhalation Solution administered either  alone or with other bronchodilators, especially beta adrenergics, is  indicated as a bronchodilator for maintenance treatment of  bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,  including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Contraindications: Atrovent (ipratropium bromide) Inhalation Aerosol is contraindicated  in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to soya lecithin or  related food products such as soybean and peanut. Atrovent (ipratropium bromide) is contraindicated in known or  suspected cases of hypersensitivity to ipratropium bromide,  or to atropine and its derivatives. Adverse Reactions: Tremor  0.9% " Ellis

Response:

Side effects from Atrovent include: dryness of the oropharynx, cough, palpitations, NERVOUSNESS, dizziness, headache, and blurred vision.  I think you ARE having adverse effects from the Atrovent.  Tell the hospital consultant to look the drug up in his Physician’s Desk Reference!   Good luck.

Response:

Hi, I would like to hear from anyone using Atrovent.  How they like it and if it works for them.  They have just prescribed it for me, and I am curious about other opinions. Thanks  Lisa

I tried Atrovent, it didn’t do anything for me. Its a weak bronchodilator anticholinergic that seems to work best for COPD, especially for ex-smokers or others with damaged lungs. It seems to have minimum side effects for most people so its worth a try since your doctor recommends it. Its slow acting so would not be used for rescue unless other bronchodilators were added, like albuterol.
