parasites

Question:

Help! what is the best way to rid my pond and goldfish of parasites. They are attached to the outside of my fish. They look like a small clear round disk, with a small worm-like creature in the center.

Response:

Hi: Does this wormlike creature, from a distance, look like a porcupine quill sticking out of the fish?  If so, we have it in our fish (some of them) and I’ve done some reading on it.  It’s an (if the same) anchor worm.  It carries it’s own egg sac with it…plus some eggs could be on bottom of pond..and they propel themselves towards their victim, where they imbed themselves (their head) to parasitize the fish.  What I had read on them, it said you could treat your pond, but it wouldn’t kill the ones in the fish and their eggs…you had to literally net the fish and remove the worm with a tweezer…swabbing the wound with Mercurochrome adn the fish dipped for 10 to 15 minutes in a salt bath of one lb of salt to 3 gallons of water. Since reading this info…(a few days later) my husband bought a treatment which is supposed to kill this anchor worm in the pond and on the fish, plus its’ eggs.  Also should kill other parasites in pond.   Hope someone else has used this…but will use it anyway as quite a few of our fish have this problem  None of our Shubunkans yet..only Rosy Reds.  It’s called what else but, "Anchors Away" by Jungle Pond Products.

Response:

Hi Dianne, Care to tell us how the treatment worked for your fish? Regards, Dawn

Ah, coccidia. Your lucky the vet could detect it in the stool sample! Try this website: http://www.peteducation.com/parasites/coccidia.htm The main site page has a bunch of useful info! It could have been from the previous cats, the cat could have been born with it, or it could have come from a fly or other bug that the cat ate. I bet previous cats. Mary

Fleas, eating bugs. You could even bring in the buggers on your shoes and pants legs if you walk through grass, although that’s kinda rarer than fleas. Pills for 20 days? What kind of eggs are these? If it’s giardia, that’s from contaminated water, or from not cleaning her water dish regularly.

Response:

Fleas…  that’s where worms and eggs come from.  What you need to do is have your home sprayed for fleas as well.  But please be careful because getting rid of fleas with pesticides can be harmful to kitty if you’re not careful.  Talk to your vet about this!  Good luck! — Happy New Year! ~~Laurie 171.5/136/130!! It can be anything from coccidiosis which is easily treated to some very new and strange organisms that are showing up in my area.  I just this morning lost a 16-months-old German Shepherd to a rare organism that devastated him in a one month period.  At least, that’s what my vet is thinking now. This site may interest people here with symptoms of Crohns but no firm diagnoses.  I suffered for seven years with 2 parasites…I had colon inflammation and bleeding from the bowel, lost heaps of weight and basically was very sick.  I’m well now after specific drug therapy. My story is on the site…..it may help someone out there, especially if no Crohns has been found, and the diagnoses could be IBS ( http://bara.idx.com.au/dfragilis/ibs_a_misdiagnoses.htm ) Jackie also: http://bara.idx.com.au/dfragilis/info.htm PS:  Both of the paras on the site are capable of causing colitis and bowel inflammation.

Response:

Hey Jan, Sorry to hear your son’s crohns flared up in Januray. your a good mom by trying all that is possible to heal him. The holidays are hard for me. My colitis gets worse every time I eat alot. The multi-enzymes are still working for me. I’m still off meds and felling lot better than when I was on meds. Along time ago a kid told me about enzymes. I tried them and they didnt do much. Then you incourage me to take multi-enzymes. It made a world of difference. Thanx Stan
