I take it your talking about nobody answering your post. I’m sorry you feel that way.  You have to understand that some times there isn’t anyone who knows the answers that someone is looking for.  It has nothing to do with caring or not caring.  We’re not Dr’s,  we try to help when we can.  From what I’ve read over the past few months there are a lot of caring people on this ng. I hope you start to feel differently about the ng. Sherry – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – After having terrible ‘fistulas’ on my butt since 1995 after taking ‘prednizone’ for my Chrons ,I’m looking forward to the relief I keep hearing about with the Remicade drug infussions. But ! I have to ask you guys who have went in for the Remicade treatment , if the GI wanted any of you to have a ‘barium bum flush’ ? A scope or otherwise first.? The reason I ‘m asking is because I ‘m terrified of this procedure , especially the bleeding bowel and lost bowel control.( for the better part of the month) that results from the test. I had a ’shot’ for Pneumonia given to me as a prep for the chance that I fall into that catagory . My arm feels like I was injected with a sledge hammer instead of a pin ! Please let me know about what tests you were or were not subjected to. (the last time that the ‘radiologist’ got too agressive with his little air pump I warned him of the ‘recoil’ as I let loose every ounce of the fury I felt.  The smirk on his face was replaced with absolute terror as the ‘barium’ sprayed out over him and everything in the blast area.) Thankyou to you all in the NG who reply. Capi

Hi Capi, I have gone for the remicade treatment twice…so far my doctor has not requested that I have a colonoscopy first…I did have one after the second treatment because it was already scheduled…In a way I wish they would so you can see the results of the treatment…If they bother you tell him, but I don’t see any reason for having it done in order to get the treatment. A bathroom in the car????  Now that will be a pretty picture traveling down the highway!  Of course you will have to have your roll of Charmin in one hand and your cell phone in the other hand!!  I guess having a bathroom in the car would be better than having a major attack in the car trash can–which I had to do one time (as the passenger, not the driver!) It was less than a year into our marriage and proved to be major embarrassing for me!  We were on the highway (I 35) and Don was driving like a bat outta hell trying to get to a rest stop for me.  I was getting panicky, and he said just use the little trash can!!  It was even more embarrassing when we finally did get to a rest stop, taking it in and cleaning it out!  augh!!  I do feel very loved though…Now that you know way more than you ever wanted to know about me…  :)  Jane – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The Big Game is tonight – $190 million is the jackpot right now.  76 million to 1 odds of winning, but I think I’m gonna win.  Heres a list of where my winnings will go: 1.    I will give some money to the CCFA for Crohns research 2.    I will buy everyone in this NG a year’s supply of toilet paper 3.    I will install bathrooms in all of our cars. 4.    I will buy some Remicade and see how it works. Bactrim? You're kidding

Question:

I just finished tetracycline as part of the treatment for H. pylori and I am flaring.  I have always flared after taking antibiotics, tetracycline included.  And once I was given a horrible antibiotic called clindamycin which made me incredibly ill.  If anyone ever tries to give you clindamycin, RUN the other way. Kelly

Response:

My experiance was with tetracycline as well. Five weeks after ending about eighteen months on it I was diagnosed with UC. Six more weeks and I was in the hospital. (Hyde101) writes: I took tetracycline for acne for 2 years in college.  I wonder if taking the

antibiotics caused Crohn’s.  The antibiotics would have destroyed both the good

and bad bacteria and interfered with the balance of the intestinal flora.

Anyone else trace antiobiotic use prefacing CD?

Response:

I took tetracycline for acne for 2 years in college.  I wonder if taking the antibiotics caused Crohn’s.

And in keeping with the yin and yang of this thread, I will testify that, as far as I can recall, I never took tetracycline before I was diagnosed with Crohn’s, but whenever I took it (for other reasons) after my diagnosis, my Crohn’s symptoms virtually disappeared. — Wayne Marsh, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

Response:

Interesting! I took Bactrim 8 years ago for 6 months at high doses for a severe nasal infection. Three months later, I came down with my first attack of UC. I have always thought that Bactrim played a role in my development of the disease.                                                                           Bill B. It’s more likely that the nasal infection played a role. There is considerable research that shows that infections can trigger IBD. See the NY Times for 12/31/96, Science section.

Larry: It is my personal opinion that ANY sickness or allergy that can cause an immune reaction can and is shown to trigger IBD. In regards to your study there are studies that show the flu, M. paratuberculosis, appendicitis, etc. can trigger IBD. And now we can add the excess production of snot as a trigger. How interesting. We leak at both ends! With many triggers (or potential triggers) its is near impossible to avoid them all to avoid the disease. My own belief is that it will take genetics to finally "cure" the disease.

Response:

I seem to break all the "rules".  When I was in the middle of   a four month flareup with no end in sight, I got a bad sinus   infection.  My flareup suddenly stopped.  I thought that maybe   my immune system got busy with something else and forgot about   my colon for awhile. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Interesting! - Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – But STRANGE enough, I went to see the family GP for a sinus infection and he prescribed Bactrim, the antobiotic. Almost suddenly the bleeding stopped as well as the diarrhea, etc.  After about 4 days of terminating the prescription, the problems recur.  Two more prescriptions of Bactrim had the same results.  My GI specialist has no answer because stool sample analysis shows no bacteria content.  This is not one of the antibiotics mentioned in the Web that is supposed to be beneficial for these problems.  Anyboby  hear of such  a thing.  Sure would love some input.        Ozzie  Neroni

Dear Ozzie:  I has a similar occurrence.  There is a theory/(some say truth) that  mycobacterium paratuberculosis, which causes Crohn’s /UC symptom’s in cows  (called Johne’s disease) is  causing the same in humans.  This bacteria is normally not tested for  existence in your intestines.  When you consume dairy and or (not well  cooked) beef products you may be (re-)innoculating yourself with this  bacteria (which goes to work eating your intestines).  When you stop the  Bacterium, the remaining bacteria surviving go back to work eating you up.  For more info on the bug go to http://www.moomilk.com/ under the section  called Animal Health (hope the article is still there).  Anyway, I hope this reply posts.  It seems like some of my posts are being  blocked (by the Dairy Industry???).   I’ll send it several times if it  doesn’t post and we’ll see what happens.  No dairy, no beef regards,  M  p.s. Tonight I came upon this disc group and am cheered to read how some of you folks are faring with this  dreaded disease.   I have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and , possibly, Chron’s.  For 3 years I have endured bleeding bowel movements and agitated bowel movements.  For it I am taking, religiously, Rowasa and Asacol–which I guess keep things somewhat in check but  don’t really rid the problem.  The only thing that works apparently is Prednisone, but that prescription is doled out mightily miserly.        But STRANGE enough, I went to see the family GP for a sinus infection and he prescribed Bactrim, the antobiotic.

Frustrated with work!! they don't understand endo

Question:

How inconsiderate can she get?   I know exactly how hard it is to keep a job with endo. I personally work as a temp, so I can take off as much as I want. Now on the downside, I don’t get sick leave, so when I miss work, I don’t get paid.   But at least I don’t have to put up with the bull and I get medical and I am well paid. You need to let her know exactly what you have wrong with you and let her realize there are different stages.  I do think printing out a bunch of info will help. But you know, I have found with some bosses, there is nothing you can do.  And just like doctors, when you find a good one, keep them. I hope this finds you doing well. Take care Holly

Response:

Michelle…I know exactly what you are going thru.  I too miss about 6 -10 days a year because of my Endo.  Finally, I brought in a bunch of Endo Assn. newsletters for my boss to read.  When I was out for two months due to back-to-back surgeries, I think it finally sunk in that I WAS sick.  As it turned out, after 7 years of trying to get pregnant, my supervisor went in for her first lap and gee-whiz…guess what they found?  Yep, you guessed it…ENDO.  Takes one to know one, I guess.  I was upfront and honest with her, and she has finally eased up a bit…cutting me some slack.  Instead of taking sick days, I’m allowed to make the time up later.  Good luck…I hope this has helped somewhat. Sandy

Response:

Hello all…. First I want to say thank you for all of your help as I am new to this group( as I just got a computer) but not new to endo.  I am glad that I stumbled on to this. Well here it goes……  I was talking to the owner of the store were I work and she asked me to step into her office where she proceeded to tell me that you can control your endo…..and that I wasn’t.  Can you believe this?  I was so upset.   She told me that you can control your endometriosis.  She doesn’t have it, but she says she has a friend that does and she can control hers???????  I don’t know what to do.

What, has she got it confused with alcoholism or diabetes?  Ask for the name and address of her friend, so she can spread the good word on ‘controlling’ endo!  There are thousands of women out here who want to know… I usually miss one day every other month because of my endo… I know that is not terrific but I didn’t think it was that bad … do you?

Not bad at all.  If you only miss one day every other month, that’s less than schoolkids are allowed to miss school without having to make up days. A good job will give you one and a half paid vacation days a month, besides sick time.  If your boss is complaining about time you miss, she isn’t living in the real world. What can I do about my boss any suggestions… I am about ready to quit just because I can’t stand her telling me things that she thinks she knows but can’t possibly know because she doesn’t have it !!!!!!

Start flooding her with information.  If the strictly-informative handouts from the endo association don’t work, start printing out things from websites – like the amount and type of drugs some sufferers have to take just to function – how many repeated operations are done – if you can, maybe even the ‘gory’ pictures from operations… If you can’t educate ‘em, gross’em out!    :-) Good luck. =Tamar

I was talking to the owner of the store were I work and she asked me to step

into her office where she proceeded to tell me that you can control your endo…..and that I wasn’t.< Hi Michelle!! This is the part where I go insane and completely understand why people hurt their bosses. I went from missing one or two days a month to missing entire months as a result of all the surgeries I was having.  In the beginning it wasn’t so bad so I didn’t feel the need to tell my boss (who was female, incidentally, and quite healthy) all about my personal life.  When it started progressing into a full blown crisis, I went into her office before she could confront me and proceeded to educate her…complete with tales of bleeding, bowel problems and infertility.  She was so taken aback and I think even embarrassed (I find that some people can be embarrassed into silence by the gruesome truth!) that she gave me the total green light to take care of my health first.  Her view was, if I can’t be taking care of myself, how the heck can I possibly take care of my job?!  I was lucky in that respect, and was also lucky that she was a very powerful dept. head and really had no one above her, so I was very much protected.  I also made sure that when I was able to work, I worked myself to the bone, so she could see that I wasn’t just faking it or anything.  That trade-off made it possible to be able to concern myself with my health first. That’s not to say I was without problems…I had an office manager announce in one of our staff meetings one day, "why don’t you just get pregnant!! That will cure you!!!"  That was the closest I ever came to actually becoming physically violent. =)  I explained to her in a very calm voice that I was (at that time) currently dealing with yet another year of infertility and that it a.)wasn’t an option and b.) would NOT cure me.  I then went on to mention to her that perhaps she’d like to take it up with my direct report, who was in essence, in a position to fire her on the spot.  She never brought it up again.  Explain to your boss that we’d all love to hear from her friend, who controls her endo…we’re obviously missing something that only she knows.  Then bombard her with information…gross her out, like I did with my boss, with personal experiences if you’d like.  Also educate her until she can’t take it anymore and just leaves you alone.  And I’m sure you’re already doing it, but give 110% of your effort when you can – then take care of your health when you can’t.  No one will be able to fault you for not doing your part when your health is permitting.  Also, isn’t it illegal to harrass people on the grounds of their health when they have a proven, documented disease?? I have since resigned for health reasons but I was able to make it a workable arrangement while I was there.  If you can’t, perhaps you can look for other options…easy to say, hard to do, I know, particularly at holiday time…but the important thing to remember is that your health comes first.  Like my boss said, if you can’t be any good to yourself, how can you be good to your job and your employers?  It’s high time workplaces everywhere recognize that individuals are not machines, we are real people with real issues to deal with.  If your boss can’t get that through her head, tell her to hire a robot who has no life and no concerns outside the job.  Better yet, tell her to hire her pal who controls her endo so well.  She obviously has no clue.   To make yourself feel a little better, remember that what comes around goes around, and eventually one day your boss will have to deal with a crisis of her own…you can then walk over to her and tell her that your friend is in the same position and doing great – and that she’s just obviously not controlling herself. I wish you didn’t have to deal with this, you have enough crap to go through everyday just living with this damn disease.  Please feel free to email me anytime you want to vent, ok?  I hope she leaves you alone very soon. Wishing you the best, Heather PS sorry this was so long, but I see this happening all the time and it really bothers me!!!

Response:

Hi Shelly,    Welcome to our family of endo sisters(and their SOs).    I agree with everyone else, that you need to print out some information and lay in on her.  Her friend can’t have it that bad or the meds work for her, but we all do not react to this disease in the same way or the meds or surgeries to treat it.  I resent people that ‘know someone with and had babies just fine or are doing great’, if only they could "really" know what it’s like to have it.    Hang in there and don’t take any stuff from anyone.  Do what is good for you and right for you.
